From Teaching to Learning: Discovering the Invisible Foundations of Education in Asia

We are pleased to announce that a story featuring a working professional who pursued graduate studies abroad through our organization was published in the NIKKEI Reskilling web series, Our Global Reskilling.

The article follows Mr. Watanabe, a former junior high and high school English teacher in Japan, who realized during his career that although he encouraged his students to study abroad, he himself had never had such an experience. This realization led him to make the bold decision to pursue graduate studies in Malaysia mid-career.

The story describes his life in Malaysia, the differences he observed in educational approaches, and the renewed appreciation he gained for the strengths of Japanese education through studying overseas.

Through his experience living in Malaysia, Mr. Watanabe encountered the cultural mindset of “Tidak apa-apa”—meaning “It’s okay, things will work out.” His reflections on the value of studying in Asia, the significance of cultural flexibility, and embracing diversity present a compelling new role model of educators becoming learners themselves.

The article also highlights Malaysia as a financially realistic study abroad option and emphasizes its importance as an alternative to traditional Western destinations.
